Whether you become ill and need help with medical bills overseas or you need help replacing your luggage, you’ll appreciate having this type of insurance in place no matter what happens. But how can you file a claim if you are traveling? In some situations, you can wait until you get home to file your claim. However, it tends to be a better decision to contact your insurance company right away to report any types of instances of loss as soon as possible.

Interruption Claims

If you are filing a trip interruption claim, such as needing to travel back home in the middle of your trip, you’ll need to support this need with facts. If it is a medical emergency that is causing your trips interruption, you will need a doctor to verify that this occurred. For this reason, if you are ill, it is important to visit your doctor right away even if you are overseas. Seeking immediate medical care is important. File this type of claim immediately. After you seek medical attention, contact the insurance company from overseas to provide information about your claim. Keep in mind that your travel insurance provider may be able to offer recommendations on where to get help, how to arrange for transportation you need, and how to obtain a foreign translator.

Other Claims

For other types of claims, such as those related to your baggage, you should contact your insurer as soon as possible. Claims should never be assumed. As soon as you know something is wrong, contact your insurer. Not only will they tell you what your options are for filing a claim, but they’ll also tell you what to do right now to rectify the situation, if possible. And, be sure you have documentation to support all of the claims you made. You’ll want to have proof of expenses, refunds made to you, and documentation about lost items.

Whenever it is possible to do so, contact your travel insurance provider to request the help you need. You’ll find the process easy to do, in most cases. And, because you can talk to your insurer at that time, you can reduce the risk of miscommunications later.
