Make Memories This Memorial Day: Be Safe

Servicemen saluting the flagIt’s Memorial Day weekend!!! The smell of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs is in the air, the pool is ready to go, and the boat is itching to get out on the water. Memorial Day is a fun day of family, friends, and outdoor activities. More importantly it’s a time to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. While you’re enjoying all the activities that come with the long weekend, make sure that you are paying attention to some of the risks involved. These tips will help keep you and your loved ones safe this Memorial Day!

  1. Watch children swimming in pools – There is no better time to commence the opening games of pool season than Memorial Day. If you have children and/or pets keep a close eye on them. A fun holiday weekend is not the opportune time to deal with a crisis!
  2. Don’t Drink and Drive – If you, or anyone you know, decide to consume alcohol on Memorial Day, do not get behind the wheel. Even buzzed driving is drunk driving. One drink can severely impair your decision-making and motor skills. If you need to go somewhere have a designated driver or call Uber or Lyft.
  3. Watch out for reckless drivers on the road – Even if you are practicing safe driving, others on the road may not be. Holiday weekends are notorious for accidents. In order to stay safe while driving, leave plenty of time to get to your destination. By doing so, you relieve some stress and will be able to be more cautious as you drive. Leave adequate room between you and the car in front of you and don’t drive late at night when statistically more drunk drivers are out.
  4. Practice Boat Safety – The roads aren’t the only place to practice safe driving. About the time pools are opening lake season launches as well. Be aware of boats that seem out of control and steer clear. If something seems amiss don’t be afraid to report to boat patrol. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
  5. Use caution around the grill – Grilling on Memorial Day is a must! If you are using a grill, exercise caution. Watch out for children and pets around the fire. Also, avoid wearing baggy clothes as you grill to prevent your clothes catching on fire. Once you are done grilling, ensure all flames are out completely.
  6. Prevent accidents in your home – Take some time to prepare your home for guests. Installing handrails by stairs, making sure that walkways are clear, and having proper lighting in outdoor areas are easy ways to keep guests safe. If you have rugs, make sure they are not slippery. Accidents happen so make sure your liability limit on your homeowners policy is adequate before you entertain!

Have fun this Memorial Day weekend! Kick back and relax and enjoy some time off.

From our family at ECI, we want to thank all the service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom! We are eternally grateful for that sacrifice!
