MotorcycleAre you planning a summer road trip on your motorcycle? While an exhilarating journey is in store, the enjoyment of your trip largely depends on safety. Here are a few tips to help you protect yourself, your bike and your belongings while on the road.

Protect Your Bike

Before leaving, make sure you’re up to date on all recommended maintenance. If there’s a minor issue you’ve been putting off, have it repaired. You’ll also need to monitor the condition of your motorcycle during the road trip. Periodically check the tire pressure, oil levels and anything else that may need your attention to keep your bike performing well. It’s also up to you to protect your bike from thieves and weather damage, so bring along a well-fitted, breathable motorcycle cover and a lock.

Stay Connected

Though you should never use your cell phone while driving, it is important to check in when you stop to rest. You can stay current with weather forecasts and route options, along with informing your loved ones of your location so they can direct the authorities in case of emergency. Additionally, you can look up local attractions and motorcyclist meet-ups that you may wish to visit along the way.

Pace Yourself

Road trips are often limited by time constraints, so it’s helpful to plan your route and the miles you expect to travel each day before of leaving. Be sure to plan for rest stops so you can eat, use the bathroom and stretch your legs for a bit. Keeping a steady pace helps you stick to your plans; however, you should always stop to rest if you’re feeling tired or overheated.

Mind the Weather

Summer is a great time for vacations, but it’s easy to overheat or become dehydrated. Look into weather-appropriate options, like cold neck towels or a cooling vest. Wearing a water backpack helps you stay hydrated between stops. You may also consider wrapping the belongings stored in the saddlebags in trash bags to prevent moisture from getting in and damaging your stuff.

Get Motorcycle Insurance

Apart from keeping you street legal, motorcycle insurance also protects your finances in the event of an accident or other covered circumstances. Review your policy before leaving and add any necessary coverage to ensure that you’re protected, wherever the road takes you.
